As Yom Kippur ended in Vancouver, we were horrified to hear about yesterday's terror attack on a synagogue in Manchester. We mourn those who were murdered, pray for the recovery of the injured, and stand in solidarity with Britain’s Jewish community. Once again, we are witnessing hate-filled violence against innocents who are doing nothing more than gathering in community to pray. It is incomprehensible and must stop. May the memories of the victims be a blessing. You can read our advocacy agent, the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs' response here.

This heartbreaking event reminds us of the importance of standing united against antisemitism and hate. That's why we’ve released more tickets for the October 8 screening next week. This event is designed to raise awareness beyond the Jewish community, and we encourage you to invite non-Jewish friends to join us in learning more about the impact of antisemitism. Purchase tickets here.

And speaking of coming together, registration for the October 7th Commemoration is now closed, as we have reached full capacity. We warmly invite you to join the live stream by clicking here on Sunday, October 5th, at 7:00 p.m.

As we look ahead, we hold onto hope. This Sunday marks a critical deadline for Hamas to accept the peace agreement. While the outcome remains uncertain, Jewish communities around the world are united in prayer for the safe return of the hostages and for a lasting peace in the region.

In the face of unimaginable pain — from Manchester to October 7 — we bear witness to something extraordinary: the Jewish spirit not only surviving but thriving. Here in British Columbia, our communities are growing, bold and unbreakable.

Welcoming New Community Connectors Across BC
Jewish Federation is committed to building vibrant Jewish communities in every corner of our province. That commitment comes to life through our Community Connectors—local leaders who foster engagement, connection, and belonging.

We’re thrilled to welcome Abbey Westbury as our new Community Connector for the Okanagan. Abbey has been a pillar of Jewish life in the region for over a decade, serving as Vice President of the OJC and as a Board Member of the Jewish Museum and Archives of BC.

On Salt Spring Island and the Gulf Islands, Ayala Reznik has already begun her work, bringing energy and vision to her role. Ayala is focused on cultivating meaningful connections and expanding Jewish engagement across the islands.

We’re thrilled to welcome Elvira Molochkovetski and Anabel Wind to our Victoria team in partnership with the Jewish Federation of Victoria and Vancouver Island (JFVVI).

Elvira, recipient of the Harry Silverberg Young Leader of Distinction Award from the Jewish Federation of Winnipeg in 2021 for her extensive community involvement, is working with PJ Library, bringing Jewish stories and programs to families.

Anabel will focus on connecting with the local Israeli community and building bridges across Victoria’s Jewish life. You might recall Anabel's performance at the Yom HaShoah event at the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia.

In Squamish, Sara Evans will support local Jewish engagement, strengthen connections between individuals and organizations, and work closely with both Federation and grassroots partners to foster a vibrant, inclusive Jewish life in the area.

In South Delta, Lizz Kelly has joined our team, bringing her experience in community engagement with the Chamber of Commerce to her new role. Lizz will focus on developing and strengthening South Delta’s Jewish connections and fostering belonging.

In the Comox Valley, Jessica Benoualid's work over the past year to create welcoming spaces for the Jewish community made her the perfect fit for this position. Jess will collaborate with the local lay leader committee to develop key programs and build relationships with community organizations in the central Island area.

Together, these incredible individuals are helping us build stronger, more connected Jewish communities across British Columbia. We’re so lucky to have them on board!

Celebrate Sukkot in Your Region

Across British Columbia, our regional communities and our partners are bringing this spirit to life with events that reflect the diversity and warmth of Jewish life beyond Vancouver.
Check out the Community Calendar for a full list of upcoming events. From Squamish to Salt Spring, there are many opportunities to gather, shake the lulav, and enjoy the joy of the season together.

Please note: Jewish Federation offices will be closed on Tuesday, October 7th and Wednesday, October 8th, in observance of Sukkot.

Wednesday was National Seniors Day! To mark this day, we are highlighting three of our incredible partners who support our community's seniors every day:

Jewish Seniors Alliance of British Columbia (JSA)
JSA is a volunteer-driven organization committed to enhancing the lives of seniors. Through its Senior Peer Support Program, volunteers offer free emotional support and companionship to those who are lonely or isolated—through one-on-one visits, walks, and regular phone calls.

Kehila Society of Richmond – Jewish Seniors Program
Kehila’s seniors program is another example of “seniors supporting seniors.” Every Monday from September to June, participants gather at Beth Tikvah Congregation for coffee, a three-course meal, and engaging programming. A monthly Wellness Clinic offers blood pressure checks, outreach support, and even reflexology and manicures.

Learn more or get involved here.

L’Chaim Adult Day Centre
L’Chaim offers a joyful and stimulating environment filled with physical, cognitive, and social activities for individuals who require adult day services due to chronic health issues. Programs like News & Views, mini-putt, storytelling, and the Java Music Club help seniors stay active and connected.

These partners emphasize that vibrant Jewish life includes every generation—and that our elders are essential to the strength and continuity of our community.
