This week I celebrated a birthday, and as I take this time for personal reflection, I am filled with gratitude for the privilege of being part of this remarkable community and for the opportunity to walk alongside you as we strengthen the bonds that make Jewish life vibrant, caring, and connected.

I’m also incredibly proud to lead an amazing team whose passion and dedication inspire me every day. Thank you for all the kind birthday wishes. May this year bring us more achievements than ever before, and may we continue to grow, connect, and make a lasting impact together.

To discuss the safety and well-being of our community, we met with Jewish leaders and key partners. We sat down with Chief Constable Steve Rai, NS, DD, and Nico Slobinsky, VP Pacific Region at our advocacy agent, the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), as well as our Board Chair, Lana Marks Pulver, to address the rise in antisemitism and the importance of protecting Jewish institutions.

We’re grateful for the Chief’s commitment to our community’s safety and our ongoing collaboration.

We also met with Consul General Shawn Crowley, who reaffirmed the U.S. Administration’s unwavering support for religious freedom and its strong condemnation of antisemitic activity. These conversations are more than symbolic—they’re the foundation of the partnerships that help keep our community safe and strong.

We are continuing to monitor developments that impact the safety of our community. This week, Dallas Brodie, MLA for Vancouver-Quilchena and leader of OneBC, filed a private prosecution against Charlotte Kates, international coordinator for Samidoun, a listed terror organization. Jewish Federation and CIJA issued a public statement, which can be read here.

CIJA's National Town Hall Webinar: “Navigating Antisemitism in the New School Year”

This webinar is designed to equip parents and grandparents with the tools, strategies, and contacts they need to help their children thrive in today’s educational landscape. Panellists from across Canada will share insights, including our community’s very own Ginaya Peters, who will speak about how educators can effectively combat hate in the classroom. Education as a Tool for Change
As we continue to confront rising antisemitism, it’s clear that education plays a vital role in shaping a more informed and compassionate society. Teaching the next generation about Jewish history, identity, and the consequences of hate is not just preventative—it’s transformative.
That’s why we’re proud to spotlight the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre (VHEC), Western Canada’s leader in Holocaust education. Each year, VHEC engages over 25,000 students and educators through programs that explore the Holocaust’s historical significance and its relevance today.

These programs encourage reflection on moral responsibility, human rights, and social justice. The VHEC offers them to accommodate unique teaching and learning requirements and schedules.

Axis Summer Social: A Night to Remember

One of the things I’ve come to appreciate deeply in this role is how vital young adult programming is to the health and future of our community. These aren’t just events—they’re moments where identity is explored, friendships are formed, and leadership begins to take shape.

That spirit was alive and well at our Axis Summer Social. The room buzzed with energy—filled with dancing, arcade games, laughter, and meaningful reconnections. It was more than just a party; it was a celebration of belonging and a testament to the joy and strength that this generation contributes to our shared story.

A huge shoutout to our amazing Young Adults Committee for making it all happen: Eva Leitin, Einat Livni, Ellie Sherman, Vanessa Diamond, Michaela Mackenzie, Jodi Schneider, Micah Berlow, and Teddy Hector; and to Katia Fermon, manager of Families and Young Adult Engagement.

Another exciting opportunity for young professionals is just around the corner: Match & Make a Difference is happening on Wednesday, September 17.

It’s a one-night event where you can connect with local Jewish organizations and discover ways to get involved—whether through volunteering, event planning, or leadership.
If you have young adults in your life—children, grandchildren, or friends—please share this registration link with them: https://www.jewishvancouver.com/network-match

Federation Campaign Launch Coming Soon
Our campaign is set to launch in just a few weeks, and we're excited to share it with you. To kick things off, we have a special message from comedian and advocate Elon Gold. Join us on September 11 for our Stand-Up for Community and be part of something amazing. Secure your spot here.

JWest: The People Behind the Vision

We’ve talked a lot about JWest lately—what’s being built, when it’s happening, and yes, even where everyone will park. But behind the plans and progress is a powerful story of collaboration.

Earlier this week, JWest shared a newsletter highlighting the leadership and dedication driving this once-in-a-generation project forward. The JWest Foundation Board, the JWest Corp Board, and several volunteer committees—alongside leadership from the Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver, Jewish Federation of Greater Vancouver, and King David High School—have been guiding the project every step of the way. Now, with the project in full swing, a dedicated staff team has been assembled to support volunteers and partner organizations in delivering the day-to-day operations. Click here to meet the people behind JWest.

Get Involved in Community

With next week marking the final stretch before many of us head back to class or settle into fall routines, it’s the perfect time to reconnect, recharge, and explore new ways to make a difference. Check out job and volunteer opportunities here.
