Israel's 2026 Election: Democracy, War, and the Future of the Social Contract

Israel’s next election will be the first national election after October 7 and the wars that followed. More than a contest between parties, it is likely to become a referendum on Israel’s democratic character, the balance between security and civil society, the role of religion and nationalism in public life, and the future of Jewish-Arab relations inside Israel.

This talk will examine how Israel’s internal questions - trust in state institutions, Ultra-Orthodox enlistment, Arab-Palestinian citizenship, religion and state, and the meaning of democratic governance after trauma - are inseparable from Israel’s regional future, its relationship with the international community, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Dr. Masua Sagiv is a Senior Faculty member of the Shalom Hartman Institute and the academic advisor of its Center for Shared Society, as well as a senior fellow at the Helen Diller Institute, U.C. Berkeley.
