The Community-wide Kristallnacht Commemorative Program will feature keynote speaker, Judy Batalion, author of international bestseller, 'The Light of Days, The Untold Story of Women Resistance Fighters in Hitler’s Ghettos.' Born in Canada, Judy has been traveling and speaking internationally, and is currently working on adapting her book ‘The Light of Days’ for a screenplay with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Partners.
The event will mark the 83rd anniversary of Kristallnacht, the state-sponsored pogrom known as the “Night of Broken Glass,” which saw the overnight destruction of Jewish businesses and synagogues, the death of nearly 100 Jews and the deportation of 30,000 more to concentration camps. In remembrance of this tragic night, the commemorative program will provide an important opportunity for Holocaust survivors and their families to mourn, together with federal, provincial and local government officials, consular representatives and the broader Vancouver community. There will be memorial candle lighting by local survivors of the Holocaust, and a proclamation from the City of Vancouver. Both the community as well as the general public will be welcome.
